For a few hours each day, it's probably one of the busiest places on Spangdahlem (if not THE busiest).

At any given point, hundreds of people submit their orders through here, ensuring they get the resources needed to complete their busy days.

It's not on the flightline or part of any squadron - it's the sandwich deli at the base commissary.

The food service workers process on average between 250 to 350 sandwiches for customers each day, particularly during the lunch hour.

"I'd have to say the half loaf with turkey and ham is our most popular," said Barry Merchant, a food service worker and U.S. Virgin Islands native. "But we still get all kinds of orders a day."

In addition to serving up ordered sandwiches, the staff also make salads to order and prepare the rotisserie chicken sold next to the deli.

"I retired from the Air Force in 1993 and from AAFES in 2012," said Steve Short, a deli food worker and Hollywood, Calif., native. "I do this for fun and to support our Airmen."
