On July 9, 2007, a General Court-Martial at Spangdahlem Air Base sentenced Maj. Jonathan P. Elliott, 726th Air Mobility Squadron, to five months confinement and gave him a reprimand for driving drunk on July 21, 2006.

Maj. Elliott accepted responsibility for his misconduct and pled guilty to the charge and specification in front of a military judge.

On July 21, 2006, Major Elliott operated a motor vehicle from the Spangdahlem area to Kapaun Air Base, Germany, after he admittedly consumed alcoholic beverages that day. After arriving at Kapaun AB, members of 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron suspected Maj. Elliott was intoxicated.

Shortly thereafter, an eye witness stated that he had just seen Maj. Elliott driving on Kapaun AB. The members immediately notified the base police, who conducted a field sobriety test and two breathalyzers. The results of these tests indicated that Maj. Elliott was under the influence of alcohol. Other evidence supporting that Maj. Elliott was drunk were statements he made to co-workers.

This case underscores that a decision to drink and drive can have very serious consequences whether you are enlisted or an officer. Anyone caught drinking and driving will face the consequences of that decision.
