In an effort to increase teamwork and camaraderie between the base and local emergency responders, Spangdahlem Air Base hosted an exercise, Saturday 12 July.

The exercise scenario was a mock attack, consisting of an improvised explosive device detonation at an aircraft and a secondary explosion a few minutes later at the Fire Station. The exercise was designed to test the response time, organization and how well members of base Security Forces, Fire Department, Medical personnel and the local Deutsches Rotes Kreuz, and Feuerwehren units work together in a time-critical scenario.

Including the triage and simulated MedEvac of injured personnel to local Krankenhausen, the exercise lasted about two hours. Afterward, leaders from all of the groups tested that day sat down for a meeting to discuss the good points and bad points of the exercise. As part of the recently signed Mutual Aid Agreement between Spangdahlem Air Base and our host nation neighbors, this exercise was one of many steps to train U.S. personnel and German personnel to work together more efficiently in times of crisis.
