Barons continue winning streak Published Sept. 30, 2008 By Eric Naisbitt Bitburg High School student SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- The Bitburg Barons defeated the SHAPE Spartans this weekend to improve their record to 3-0. However, this victory was not an easy one. Prior to the game Saturday, the Barons' record was 2-0 and the Spartans' record was 1-1. Bitburg has a dominating running game this year, which called for a battle against SHAPE's fierce defense. The first quarter started off slowly as both teams could not outsmart the other's defense. The Barons' running game seemed to have little effect early in the game, but the Spartans' balanced offense seemed to have no advantage either. The first quarter came to an end without either team scoring. The scoring drought did not last long as Spartan's quarterback Jimmy Drago pitched the football to runningback Michael Goff for a 9-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. Kicker Kewin Nielsen added on the extra point to give the Spartans' a 7-0 lead. The Barons answered with a 5-yard touchdown run by running back Darius Wynn. Quarterback Matt Less shovel-passed to wide receiver Aaron Law to add on the two-point conversion. Late in the quarter, Wynn went to work again as he plowed 13 yards for another touchdown. He also ran in the two-point conversion. Halftime came with a score of Bitburg 16 - SHAPE 7. On the Barons' first offensive drive of the third quarter, Less scrambled 8-yards for a touchdown. Wynn tacked on the two-point conversion. There was another drought of scoring that lasted about 11 minutes of playing time, but in those 11 minutes, running back/defensive back Jasuan Young intercepted one of Drago's pass attempts. Late in the third quarter, SHAPE's Drago threw a screen pass to Nielson who ran 65-yards for a touchdown. He also kicked the extra-point. The third quarter ended with a score of Bitburg 24 - SHAPE 14. The Barons did not score in the fourth quarter, but SHAPE's fullback Christian Walker ran a 3-yard touchdown late in the quarter to put the Spartans within a field goal of tying. The extra-point was good. Neither team scored again, and the final score was Bitburg 24-SHAPE 21. SHAPE quarterback Drago ended the game with 6 completions out of 10 attempts that went for 170 yards and 1 touchdown. He also had 7 carries that went for 28 rushing yards. Runningbacks Jerome Gamboa finished the game with 13 carries and 68 yards and Goff ended with 9 carries that went for 36 yards and 1 touchdown. Walker finished with 1 carry for 3 yards and a touchdown. Nielson had 130 receiving yards and 1 touchdown. The Spartans altogether ran for 135 yards. Bitburg quarterback Less ended with 3 completions out of 6 attempts that went for 53 yards. He also had 14 carries for 51 rushing yards and 1 touchdown. Runningback Wynn had 28 carries that went for 159 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 2 two-point conversions. Running back Jasuan Young ran for 52 yards on 13 carries. Fullback Brock Hogan added on 30 yards on 5 carries. All together the Barons rushed for 291 yards. Come and support the Barons Oct. 4 as they take on the Wiesbaden Warriors for Bitburg's Homecoming game. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
