AAFES Gas Ration Card Published Oct. 10, 2008 By Amy Kanan 52nd Force Support Squadron SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- Many of us may have wondered why the attendant is standing out in the Spangdahlem Air Base Shoppette parking lot. By checking authorizations to buy tax-free gas before pumping, that attendant is helping everyone and eliminating the need to wait in line. Purchasing tax-free gas on a military installation in Germany is a privilege some of us have probably taken for granted. By showing our documents, we are helping the Army and Air Force Exchange Service stop unauthorized users from purchasing gas. The German government estimates it lost more than $5 billion in tax revenues due to gas sales to unauthorized patrons. The German government has zero tolerance for gas purchase abuses committed by U.S. personnel covered by the Status of Forces Agreement. What does that mean? If we allow the abuse to continue, the German government will revoke our tax-free gas privileges provided by the SOFA and we will pay German economy gas prices. Have you seen the price of a liter of gas off-base? With significant changes affecting patrons, some will ask what other policies have been amended. With the new process, you still need to show your valid identification card, vehicle registration and ESSO card. The AAFES attendant will verify that your information matches, including license plate and registration. Additionally, ensure enough liters remain in your monthly ration to support your purchase. AAFES is working hard to help us keep our tax-free gas privileges. AAFES plans to have an attendant outside the Shoppette during busiest hours, 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. During inclement weather, the individual will be under the canopy. During non-peak hours, patrons will have to go inside the Shoppette to the cash register closest to the front door. That register will be used exclusively to validate information before patrons pump gas. Please be patient as AAFES works to refine the process. With your cooperation, we will continue to enjoy tax-free gas.
