So what's with all this construction in housing?

Over the last two years, Spangdahlem Air Base's military family housing layout has drastically changed as old housing units were demolished and construction efforts to build 139 new homes has progressed. Design and execution of these two projects has been handled through the German government construction agency, Landesbetrieb LBB, under the supervision of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Europe with quality oversight provided by the 52nd Civil Engineer Squadron.

The main focus of this program is to take care of our Airmen as the majority of homes being constructed are for our junior enlisted families. This program will construct a total of 93 junior enlisted homes, 24 senior enlisted homes, four company grade officer homes, 11 field grade officer homes and seven single units built for senior officers.

This two-phase construction program began in November, 2006 with a $42.7 million project to construct 79 new housing units on Spangdahlem. This project is scheduled to be completed by the end of December, 2008. The second project, a $37.3 million initiative, began in November, 2007 with a projected completion of November, 2009 will add another 60 homes to Spangdahlem.

The two projects provide a tremendous increase in the quality of life for Spangdahlem residents- they mark the beginning of a transition from stairwell housing to single family and duplex units. These new homes also provide a number of amenities previously unavailable to Sabers including attached oversized garages for every unit, ceramic tile flooring in kitchens, baths, and laundry room, new appliances, built-in closets in all the bedrooms and radiant floor heating throughout the house.

More information about these new homes will be available during a Town Hall meeting scheduled for Oct. 23, 6 p.m., at the base theater here. Additional topics will include information about temporary living allowance and overseas housing allowance, consolidation of housing assets from Bitburg Air Base, future construction activities in the Spangdahlem housing area and information on child development and youth programs available to Sabers.

A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 12 to officially assign the first enlisted family to these newly constructed homes. The ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. and will include a walk-through of a new unit. All base residents are welcome to attend.
