America Recycles Day, 15 Nov 08 Published Nov. 10, 2008 By Herr Arno Walerius 52nd Civil Engineer Squadron SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- America Recycles Day is scheduled for Nov. 15, but every day provides an opportunity to make a difference by recycling. Spangdahlem supports this initiative through a contracted operation, which operates two Base Recycling Centers, one at Spangdahlem in Bldg. 64 and one at the Bitburg French Caserne in Bldg. 2038 near the fire station. Both locations are closed Sundays and on German holidays. The BRCs provide people a way to dispose of items the solid waste contractor doesn't normally pick up. Each BRC accepts a variety of materials including: Household hazardous waste, large bulky items that do not fit into the regular containers, paper/ cardboard, plastics, glass (sorted by color), scrap metal, wood items (treated and untreated), clothes and shoes in good condition, yard waste and all electronic appliances and devices. Household hazardous waste such as used cleaning products, paints, solvents, lighter fluid, half-full aerosol cans, propane tanks and dry-cell batteries will also be accepted at the BRCs for proper storage and disposal. The BRCs are available for disposal of household waste for military families who live in any of the following areas: Dormitories, Spangdahlem and Bitburg MFH, Speicher and Binsfeld government-leased housings. Families living on the economy may only use the BRC when they can't wait for the scheduled bulk trash or household hazardous waste pickup day for the town or village in which they live. All automotive parts such as transmissions, wheels, rims, fenders as well as car batteries, antifreeze, motor oil, transmission or break fluid and other vehicle parts should be recycled at the 52 Force Support Squadron Auto Skills and Development Center in Bldg. 189 on Spangdahlem Air Base. Call CEAN at 452-5124 to dispose of lithium or other types of batteries.
