The fast approaching holiday season is a wonderful time for celebrating and gift giving. Many people at Spangdahlem will be sending and receiving tidings of joy from loved ones around the world. Boxes filled with holiday wishes line shelves in the Spangdahlem Air Base mail room waiting to be processed, picked up and handed off to the recipient. With the countdown to the holiday season approaching, Sabers are reminded that prior planning and patience are important when it comes to mailing and picking up their holiday packages that prior planning and patience are important.

As patrons have probably noticed, the holiday hustle and bustle is steadily picking up at the post office. An increase in the number of packages processed through the post office here is evident from Nov. 15 through Jan. 15. Last year during this time frame the staff, made up of postal Airmen and civilians, process, stock, label and disseminate more than 1.2 million pounds of mail. To prevent your postal workers from becoming overwhelmed during the holiday season, the Spangdahlem Post Office has kicked off its annual holiday volunteer recruitment and is soliciting volunteers to help shelve and distribute mail Monday through Saturday now until January 15.

We encourage people from across the base to volunteer; even 15 or 20 minutes can make a difference. Volunteers sort letter class mail and deliver packages at our parcel pick up window.

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and of high moral standards with no record of derogatory information. Organizations, such as the Boy and Girl Scouts, can volunteer as long as they have adult supervision. Minors can volunteer if accompanied by their parent. Just stop by and take a few moments to read and sign our postal guidelines. These rules ensure volunteers know the privacy and security of our customers' mail is paramount. Once the paperwork is concluded, a Postal Clerk will train you on how to sort, pitch or deliver mail. Training is very easy. For more information about volunteering, please call the Spangdahlem AB Post Office at 452-7195 and the Bitburg Annex Post Office at 452-9405.

Don't miss your opportunity to spread holiday cheer to friends and family members in the states. Space available mail should be sent by Nov. 28, priority and first class mail before Dec. 11 and express mail no later than Dec. 18 to help ensure packages are received before Christmas.
