Approximately 30 volunteers spent their Saturday working to turn an over-grown trail into something for everyone to enjoy in the village of Weidenthal March 28, 2009.

This was the first of many trail maintenance days planned by the International Mountain Bike Association.

Despite the rainy weather the Saber Cycling Club, The Ramstein Area Cycling Club Sleepless in the Saddle organizer, Christian "Phatty;" local volunteer firefighters, a few families, Weidenthal Mayor, Herbert Bertram; and head of the tourism office, Maria Bergold, worked together to open up the brush and log littered section of trail.

Local firefighters cut downed trees blocking the path while others worked to clear and level it out. The work helps to limit potentially damaging erosion from the rain. The RACC and Saber Cycling Club cleaned the entrance, making a safe transition from the road feeding into it.

The local baker, Klaus Martin, worked all night to prepare food providing volunteers with sandwiches, refreshments and desserts.

Mayor Bertram spoke to the group about the positive impact the local cycling community has on the forest after the volunteers enjoyed lunch. He thanked the volunteers and gave special words of thanks to the cyclists from Spangdahlem and Ramstein Air Bases.

When all was said and done, a previously abandoned section of trail was once again open for cyclists, hikers and equestrians.
