Slow down, Saber drivers! As the weather gets warmer and the days get longer, the number of traffic tickets written increase. Many drivers may speed up because they think the roads are safer now that they are no longer dusted with snow or covered in ice. Some drivers may simply be distracted by the blossoming German countryside. Whatever the reason, 88 tickets were issued in January of last year. That number more than quadrupled to 397 in July.

In addition to an increase in the number of tickets, Saber drivers will see an increase in the cost of each ticket received off base. As of Feb. 1, the fines for speeding and following too closely have drastically increased. For instance, if you're caught going 70 kilometers more than the speed limit outside of town, the fine has increased from €375 to €600. You can expect to pay an additional €25-30 in fees for the cost of each proceeding.

As of April 1, security forces will also be reinforcing the point assessment system. Any speeding ticket received will result in points being assessed to your license. If you receive 12 points in a one-year period or 18 points in a two-year period, your license will be suspended for a minimum of six months.

Enjoy the spring weather, but be sure to drive safely and obey all speed limits. As fun as hiking through Germany may be, make it an optional activity rather than necessary as a result of having your license suspended.
