Tips to help ensure a successful UCI

  • Published
Be proud of the 52nd Fighter Wing, your group or squadron, and what you do. We've accomplished a lot and should let the inspector general know it! View this as a learning opportunity -- the IGs knows their stuff and want to teach, so try to learn something from them.

Here are a few tips to help ensure a successful unit complaince inspection:

Make a good first impression
· Check uniform every day
· Keep work area clean in- and outside
· Be polite to the inspectors; use customs and courtesies at all times (saluting, wearing a cover outdoors, standing for inspectors or customers)
· Continue taking care of your customers
· Know wing's chain of command
· Know unit's chain of command
· Supervisors should in-brief the IG when they arrive in your work center. Offer them your self-inspection book and get a debrief before they leave your work center. Up channel any areas of concern as soon as possible.

Take the inspector to the bulletin board, the POC or your supervisor and find the answer
· Double check the reference or Air Force Instruction
· Double check the bulletin board
· Double check with the point of contact
· Double check with someone else who knows

Always
· Ensure all occupants of your vehicle are wearing seatbelts, on and off base
· Ensure Air Force appearance standards are met (haircuts, boots, clean uniform)
· Ensure AFI compliance and think safety first!
· Keep leadership informed of results

Do
· Project a high level of morale and initiative at all times. This will give the inspectors the proper view of how we do business and make things go much smoother.
· Provide open and honest feedback to any questions the inspectors ask. This will ensure communication flows freely and avoids un-necessary stress on both the inspectors and unit personnel.
· Share all of the positive aspects of your work center and talk about "The Team" and its accomplishments when possible.
· Sell your team with your pride and "Esprit de Corps." Nothing is more impressive than a team that believes they are the best and can prove it. We are the 52nd Fighter Wing - "Seek-Attack-Destroy!"
· Standardize all programs and associated documentation (i.e. continuity binders). Not only in appearance but in practice.
· Know your processes! If you answered "no" to a checklist item then be ready to explain it. If you answered "yes" be ready to show it and explain it. They will look for ALL Airmen to do this.
· Answer the inspector's questions thoroughly but don't volunteer information.
· If the IG writes up your work center for something, ask what you should do to fix it. Mitigate the severity of the write-up by offering to fix it immediately. If unable to fix it on the spot follow up with the inspector when completed.

Don't
· Give the inspector directions on how to find someone; take him/her to the person.
· Blow off a customer by saying "I'm with the IG right now..." that could result in a write-up.
· Duel with the IG -- you will always lose.
· Hide anything. Be completely honest with the inspectors.
· Make answers up -- if you don't know an answer - look it up.
