Sabers with a knack for words, the ability to put thoughts and emotions together with a sense of flare, and a desire to share their skills with others have to look no further than the Brick House's Spoken Word event July 11, 2009.

"We are starting a Spoken Word Group," said Theresa Madison, 52nd Force Support Squadron Eifel Community Center recreation technician. "The Word will focus on sharing poetry, expression through poetry, various styles of poetry and studying the art of performing live focusing on making the artist more confident with performing in front of crowds."

The term "spoken word" covers any type of spoken performance.

"Spoken Word is a form of literary art of artistic performance in which lyrics, poetry or stories are spoken rather than sung," Ms. Madison said. "It is an opportunity for individuals to come and express themselves through poetry."

Individuals interested in refining their poetry skills will soon have a new group they can turn too.

"One of the most popular sorts of spoken word performances is performance poetry, where a poet reads poems specifically written to be performed out loud," Ms. Madison said. "These use theatrical elements with or without music. Spoken word artists most often include storytellers who narrate first-person."

Doors open at 8 p.m. and the show is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. The event is open to those 18 years old and older.

"It will be a great night out for free," Ms. Madison said. "There will be jazz music, coffee, a live singing performance and a lot of ambiance to make for an unforgettable evening."

Individuals interested in performing at the next Spoken Word must register by June 30.

"We are looking for a minimum of 10 individuals to perform two poems with a maximum of 20 performances," Ms. Madison said.
