Upcoming Events

October: The Arts and Crafts Center is hosting an artists and craftsman contest. The categories are painting, any media; drawing and prints, any media; three-dimensional, sculpture, wood, metals, etc.; general, handcrafted items, kits, molds, etc. The categories will be broken into adult, 18 and older; and youth, 13 to 17 and 12 and under. Entries need to be at building 189 by 4 p.m. Oct. 21. The entries must be submitted with a 5x7 JPEG on a compact disc. Entries must be picked up by 9 a.m. Oct. 26. Oct. 1: There will be Breast Cancer Awareness Month 5-kilometer fun runs at 6 a.m., noon and 4 p.m Oct. 1. The runs begin at the fitness center. The route is the classic 5-k fun run route on Perimeter Road. Participants can run or walk. There is no time limit. Please wear the proper shoes and work out attire. Oct. 2: There will be a Girl Scout Ice Cream Social from noon to 2 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Bitburg Chapel Annex. The event is free for all registered Girl Scouts. Oct. 2: The Health and Wellness Center is hosting a "Join the fight against breast cancer" pink/brown bag luncheon 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Spangdahlem Chapel Annex. The guest speaker will be Maj. Tara R. Chavis, women's health clinic. Door prizes will be awarded to the first 20 participants, and a fitness kit drawing is open to all attendees. Oct. 5: There will be a German Red Cross Blood Drive 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Brick House. For more information, call DSN 452-8321.

Oct. 10: The Kaiserslautern Military Community Air Force Chapels and Protestant Families presents "The marriage you've always wanted" seminar with author Gary Chapman, Ph.D. in Adult Education, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Ramstein Officers' Club. Seating is limited. The cost is $35 per couple or $45 with lunch, or $20 per person and $25 with lunch. Lunch includes soup, salad and sandwich. Oct. 10: The 3rd Annual Team Eifel Scout Unity Day will be held 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 10 at Spangdahlem Elementary School. All registered cub scouts, boy scouts, girl scouts and others interested in becoming a scout are invited to attend.

Oct. 15: The Mosel Dining Facility hosts a Deployed Family Dinner from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 15 for family members of deployed Saber servicemembers. Family members of E-4s and below will receive discount meal rates. Bring your Project Care button and a copy of deployed servicemember's deployment orders. For more information, call DSN 452-6727.

Oct. 15: There will be a free Smalltown Comedy Tour Oct. 15 at the Eifel Community Center. Doors open at 8 p.m. and the event starts at 9 p.m. The event will be hosted by Sean B and comedians Steve Brown and Tony Woods. The show is for adults 18 years and older. Tickets will be available at the community center on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, call DSN 452-7260.

Oct. 15: A Defense Finance and Accounting Service - Cleveland member, Tony Cifani, will be available 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 15 for military retirees to ask questions and discuss issues or concerns. Mr. Cifani will be conducting Call Center Services. Retirees with questions or concerns can call DSN 379-6080. If this event is successful, there will be additional call center dates in April, June and October 2010.

Ongoing Notifications

Flightline driving reminder
Never anticipate control tower directions. Always pay attention and read back instructions verbatim to prevent runway incursion. For more information, call Tech. Sgt. Stacy Miller at DSN 452-4513.

School bus safety
The new school year has arrived, and children need to be educated on the importance of bus stops, school bus and school zone safety. People also need to refresh themselves on their responsibilities when approaching a school bus stop or travel through a school safety zone. Remember to follow the speed limit, never pass a stopped school bus, don't speed through school zones, and keep your eyes open for children.

Retiree Activities Office
The retiree activities office is now open and located in building 2001, room 201 in the Eifel West (French Concern). The office is open from 11 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. every Friday and by appointment. The purpose of the retiree office is to act as a liaison between the Air Force and retired Air Force members, to help active-duty member's transition to retired status, help solve retiree problems and lobby Congress. MOPS meeting
The Spangdahlem mothers of preschoolers, or MOPs, will meet 9:15 to 11:30 a.m. the third Monday of each month at the chapel annex. Bank closure
The Bitburg Baking Center will be closed Oct. 12 to Nov. 6. The Spangdahlem Banking Center will be open to support Community Bank customer needs. Customers can also use ATMs, telephone banking and online banking. Online banking is available at DoDCommunityBank.com.

Prohibited items at sporting events

Airman's Attic

Education, training technician
Bitburg High School needs an education and training technician for Special Education. The major duties and responsibilities include: observing and recording student's behaviors and activities; tutoring students; performing a variety of administrative tasks; assisting students with disabilities; and providing assistance in eating, lifting, transferring, and facilitating the motor development of physically impaired students. The employee may monitor students in classrooms, hallways, restrooms, and cafeteria, ensuring proper behavior and observations of safety rules.
