Stamp collecting hits the Eifel Published Oct. 9, 2009 By Staff Sgt. Ciairra Carroll Custodian of Postal Effects SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- October is National Stamp Collecting Month. The United States Postal Service founded this program in 1981 as a way to introduce children 8-12 years old to the hobby of collecting stamps. The program is aimed at increasing awareness about the recreational benefits of stamp collecting for all ages and to appreciate the artistry that goes into creating a stamp. Spangdahlem and Bitburg Post Offices are commemorating National Stamp Collecting Month with a variety of activities and promotions, including giving away free commemorative stamp products to eligible patrons. Also, promotions at each post office will include coloring and stamp design contests for elementary school students. For further information, call Spangdahlem Post Office at DSN 452-7182 or Bitburg Post Office at DSN 452-9405 or ask about National Stamp Collecting Month at the postal finance window. To view the stamps in the 2009 U.S. commemorative stamp program, visit the postal store at www.usps.com/shop and click on "Release Schedule" in the Collector's Corner.
