Annual Awards Banquet recognizes Sabers

SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- Col. Tip Wight, 52nd Fighter Wing commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Sandi Miller, 52nd FW command chief, presided over the 2009 Wing Annual Awards Banquet Feb. 20 at Club Eifel.

The banquet recognized the accomplishments of Sabers, both civilian and active duty. The nominees represented each group within the 52nd FW, including geographically separated units. The nine categories encompassed recognition for military members, civilians, volunteers, honor guard members and first sergeants.

Friends, family, co-workers and leadership from across the wing attended to show their support for the winners as they faced tough competition to take home top honors. The Spangdahlem winners will go on to compete at U.S. Air Forces in Europe level, and major command-level winners will then compete Air Force-wide.

Civilian Category II: Ornelio Renedo, 52nd Operations Group, 52nd Operations Support Squadron

Honor Guard Member of the Year: Tech. Sgt. Lee Haynor, 52nd MSG, 52nd Logistics Readiness Squadron

Airmen of the Year: Senior Airman Timothy Franseen, 52nd MMG, 703rd Munitions Support Squadron

NCO of the Year: Staff Sgt. Maria Herrera, 52nd MSG, 52nd FSS

Senior NCO of the Year: Senior Master Sgt. Dion Cawthon, 52nd OG, 52nd OSS

First Sergeant of the Year: Master Sgt. Paul Schmidt, 52nd OG, 52nd OSS

Company Grade Officer of the Year: Capt. Clint Townsend, 52nd MSG, 52nd Civil Engineer Squadron
