"Willkommen at AFN," Staff Sgt. Michael Jackson, broadcaster, said, as he welcomed Mr. Joachim Kandels, Bitburg's mayor during Dec. 8's morning radio show.

The mayor spent about 30 minutes talking about events and activities in the Bitburg area and how U.S. servicemembers and their families are always welcome.

Mr. Kandels first mentioned Germany's traditional Christmas markets, and how they're a highlight of the season in most towns throughout the country. Also Bitburg has their own quaint Weihnachtsmarkt, located in the center of town until Dec. 19, he said.

According to the mayor, this market offers a variety of handmade items, including candles and Christmas ornaments. Many activities, such as choir performances, concerts and plays are scheduled. Santa Claus also visits with the children. Children also can enjoy a ride on a carousel or see a beautiful nativity scene, the mayor said.

Also available at the market is Germany's traditional Gluehwein, or spiced wine, as well as fresh waffles.

The Spangdahlem Gospel Ambassadors, and many other choirs, perform at the market Dec. 19.

According to the mayor, the Bitburg market is open noon - 7 p.m. daily. For those who would like to shop after dark, the Christmas market and stores, located throughout the pedestrian area, will remain open until 10 p.m. Dec. 16.

Besides mentioning holiday events, the Bitburg mayor also talked about other activities and attractions found in the Bitburg area.

"Bitburg has an ice rink and a hockey team," he said.

According to Mr. Kandels, ice skating is very popular this time of the year, and U.S. players are always welcome on the hockey team.

"Ice rink officials are available at telephone number 06561-8447 to provide further information on how to become a member of the hockey team and on the ice rink facility," which is located on Südring 10.

For people who would rather stay warm and relax, the Cascade Adventure Pool complex offers alternatives.

The mayor recommended a wellness massage or a visit to the sauna at the Cascade pool during the holiday season.

"Both the ice rink and Cascade pool have special offers for birthday celebrations," he said.

For anyone wishing to become a member of a local club, such as a local music association, a sports association, a soccer club, a carnival association, etc., can contact the Bitburg city administration at telephone number 06561-6001-0.
