Bitburg celebrates Fasching

BITBURG, Germany— People dress in colorful costumes to celebrate Fat Thursday for Fasching here March 3. During Fasching, or Fastnacht, often referred to as Germany's silly season, thousands of clubs host costume balls, dances and Kappensitzungen, or joke sessions. The celebration begins on Fat Thursday with Weiberfastnacht, or Ladies Fasching. Fasching is a time to chase away winter spirits and welcome the warmer seasons. BITBURG, Germany—Men guard the mayor to celebrate Fasching here March 3. After capturing city hall, the women parade through the city’s streets. In most German cities and towns, including Bitburg, Wittlich and Speicher, it is a tradition for the ladies to “capture” the local city halls and take the city key from the mayor, and for the men to guard the mayor and his key.
