The base theater is scheduled to reopen April 4.

Ceremonies begin at 5:15 p.m. with the first movie showing of "Wrath of the Titans" in 3-D at 7 p.m. and the second showing at 9:30 p.m.

The theater has been closed for nearly three months for renovations and upgrades. Some of the upgrades include a remodeled entryway, new auditorium seating, a digital projection and audio system, new paint, updated snack bar and a new theater screen.

"With these updates, it gives Airmen the opportunity to not have to drive to Ramstein [Air Base] or Luxembourg to get a quality theater experience," said Michelle Hetcher, Exchange food court manager. "Sometimes, the base movie theater can be an Airman's only form of entertainment, so it was vastly important to upgrade this for them."

The renovation project cost more than $700,000 with the burden shared between the military Exchange service and Spangdahlem's 2011 Commander in Chief's Installation Excellence award money.

"The upgrades were well-deserved," said Bobby McNaire, Spangdahlem Exchange store manager. "The community worked so hard to get these updates, and they're going to see a big difference.

"From the concession to the seating, everything is better," he continued. "The new theater is unbelievable.'"

Some of the updates make Spangdahlem's theater one of a kind, Hetcher said. This is the first military theater in Germany to have both the digital projection and sound system, and it is the only military theater in the world to have 3-D capability.

The Bitburg Castle Theater will officially close after the movie showing at 7 p.m. March 31 because of the reopening of the Spangdahlem Theater.

"There isn't a need to have both theaters available at the same time, because it will actually be worth it to drive to Spangdahlem's theater," she said. "The price is the same as it was before, so this is an incredible opportunity."

Tickets cost $5 for adults and $2.50 for children. The theater is closed Monday and Tuesday. There is one movie showing every Wednesday and Thursday at 7 p.m.; two movie showings Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.; and Sunday's movie showings are at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. For more information, call DSN 452-7469 or 06565-61-7469.
