Name: Tech. Sgt. Bernard M. Lazare

Unit: 470th Air Base Squadron

Duty title: Cyber operations NCO-in-charge

Hometown: El Segundo, Calif.

Years in Service: Fifteen

Why joined:
I wanted to see the world and enhance my education. I was also encouraged by family to join. My mother and father, as well as several aunts and uncles, have served in the U.S. Air Force.

Family:
Wife, Lineik; and son, Isaiah. We also have another boy on the way.

Hobbies: Building computers, gaming, landscaping, mountain biking and fitness training.

Favorite aspect of job: I enjoy the many facets of cyber operations. It can be overwhelming at times to keep up with maintaining and learning different aspects of the career field, but as soon as I reach a knowledge plateau in one area, I am presented with several opportunities to expand in other areas. It is never a boring day.

Most memorable Air Force experience: My most memorable experience was when I worked communications support at U.S. Air Forces in Europe. We had a lot of cool equipment to work with, and working that job expanded my skill-set quite a bit. In particular though, I had the chance to be a part of a superb team of Airmen and civilians that all pulled together. Also, when I went South Africa -- that was exceptional. The South African Air Force took us to a nature reserve on one of their helicopters and we got to see a lot of the big-game animals from the air, as well as go on safari with the local ranger the following day. It was a sweet deal.

How do you make responsible choices:
I weigh the cost of risky actions versus the occasional inconvenience of doing the safe action. Safety wins hands-down.
