Nearly eight months ago, the 52nd Logistics Readiness Squadron at Spangdahlem conducted an Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st Century event, and they are continuing to make changes based on their implementation plan.

The whole concept behind AFSO21 is to work smarter, faster and cheaper while still completing our daily tasks with the same efficiency.

Taking matters into their own hands, members of the 52nd LRS filled their walls with sticky notes, covering every step of their jobs. They even went as far as to build a lego model of their shop and how they planned to apply their changes.

"Well the first major change that we made was to move some of the offices around," said Tech. Sgt. Michael Zeigler, the NCOIC of Special Vehicle Repair. "Rather than work where they wanted to be, we put them where they needed to be."

Moving around their offices and creating separate cells for each part of the vehicle repair shop, they were able to continue their mission while critically manned and reduced the time needed to fix each vehicle.

"It reduced the walking distance for one vehicle from 5k to 3k, so we eliminated 2k just by moving offices," said Sergeant Zeigler.

The AFSO21 process helps units throughout the Air Force, just like the 52nd LRS at Spangdahlem.
