Volunteers sought for St. Martin’s School Sports Day Published Sept. 12, 2013 By Senior Airman Alexis Siekert 52nd Fighter Wing Public Affairs SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- For nearly 20 years, the Spangdahlem community teamed with special needs children from St. Martin's School in Bitburg for a fun-filled day of activities and partnership. And, like those past gatherings, the success and rewards of the children's Oct. 1 return to the base will depend on the nearly 200 volunteers needed, according to this year's project lead. "This is a wing event, and we need wing support," said Master Sgt. Conor McCarthy, 52nd Civil Engineer Squadron NCO in charge of emergency management. "This fun day is all about the kids allowing us to recognize them for who they are as individuals and give them the opportunity to compete in individual and team sports." The day is centered on sports with nearly 80 children participating in more than 10 different kinds of traditional German games. In addition to the competition, St. Martin's children will share the day with fellow American friends, said Master Sgt. David Dulaney, 52nd CES NCO in charge of expeditionary engineering. "The kids call it coming to America," Dulaney said. "They are able to play with the kids from Spangdahlem Elementary School, and, for lunch, we do hot dogs, juice boxes and things that are typical for American kids to eat." Volunteers are needed to pair with the children, run the sporting events, prepare lunch and award medals during the closing ceremonies. Both Dulaney and McCarthy emphasized the value of being a volunteer, both for the children and the communities involved. "This is such a memorable event for these children, and the interaction with them is so rewarding for the volunteers," Dulaney said. "I urge you to get involved. You won't regret it." "Get involved and make some lasting memories," McCarthy said. For more information on volunteering for Sports Day, contact Master Sgt. Lee Stanley at DSN 452-2515.
