An Airman previously assigned to the 52nd Maintenance Squadron was selected as one of the 12 Outstanding Airmen of the Year for the U.S. Air Force.

Senior Master Sgt. Christopher Haney, 1st Maintenance Squadron assistant superintendent, Langley Air Force Base is representing U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa and is one of 12 Airmen selected based on superior leadership, job performance and personal achievements.

“It is an incredible feeling,” said Haney. “I am totally stoked and couldn’t be more proud. Teamwork, mentorship and great leadership at all levels of the 52nd Fighter Wing were the contributing factors. I was selected because our team was clearly the best.”

Haney said his hard work and dedication to the 52nd FW reflects the leadership and Airmen that are stationed at Spangdahlem AB, Germany.

“I would tell Airmen they can’t make it here without a great team behind them, so take care of their people, remove barriers to their success, and be honest with your leadership,” said Haney. “Provide people opportunities and watch them surprise you with how they rise to the occasion. Always provide solutions to any problems encountered. Network with other squadrons and groups so you can be in a better position to help your team.”

A selection board at the Air Force Personnel Center initially considered 24 nominees who represented major commands, direct reporting units, field operating agencies and headquarters Air Force.

“Chris practiced outstanding followership, displayed servant leadership, and was honest with himself and others,” said Chief Master Sgt. Matthew Sabo, 52nd Maintenance Squadron superintendent. “He rolled up his sleeves and got involved in all aspects of the FW. He brought along others in the squadron and motivated them to get involved.  Moving the squadron forward, the squadron commander gave him wider margins to operate in.”

Haney led maintainers and equipment to Portugal and was named the maintenance group’s Top three president all while finishing his master’s degree.

“Chris loves the Air Force and showed it every day,” said Haney.  Around every corner for Chris, he saw opportunity to get better and, in my opinion, that resonated with our Airmen.”
