Spangdahlem Airman dies in vehicle accident

SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany --

Senior Airmen Steve Metsker, 701st Munitions Support Squadron custody forces area supervisor, died Feb. 1 at approximately 5:30 a.m. in a single-car crash near Kleine Brogel Air Base, Belgium.

"Senior Airman Steve Metsker’s death is a terrible loss for our team," said Col. Jason Bailey, 52nd Fighter Wing commander. "Losing a friend or family member is one of the greatest challenges we experience in our lives. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and our 701st teammates as they deal with this unexpected loss.”   

Metsker, 25, a Boise, Idaho, native, joined the Air Force in October 2014 and came to the 701st MUNSS in September 2017.

"Steve was an outstanding Airman. His efforts as a Security Forces Defender over the last three-plus years were instrumental to the safety and security of critical assets and personnel at Minot, Kunsan and here at Kleine Brogel,” said 701st Squadron Commander Lt. Col. Craig Bailey. “He died in active and dedicated service, ultimately ensuring the security of our great nation. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends and co-workers during this especially difficult time."
