10/24/2012 - SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- TRICARE Overseas pharmacy home delivery will no longer be an option for beneficiaries receiving prescriptions in Germany starting approximately Jan. 1, 2013.
There are currently no methods in place to replace pharmaceutical home delivery; however, TRICARE Management Activity will update TRICARE beneficiaries as soon as something is in place.
"We understand the importance of your medications, and are working to find a way to adapt to these importation restrictions," said Brig. Gen. (Dr.) Bryan W. Gamble, TMA deputy director, in a letter to beneficiaries. "... We will notify you promptly when we have updated information about this issue."
Beneficiaries can continue to fill future prescriptions from U.S. licensed providers at their nearest military treatment facility or local host nation pharmacies. TRICARE Overseas also reimburses beneficiaries 100 percent for out-of-pocket costs only when they have an authorization for use of host nation pharmacies, he said in the letter.
German law and European Union directives also impose legal restrictions on the importation of other products:
· Counterfeit items
· Guns and ammunition to include paintball and air-soft
· Meat products
· Coffee
· Tobacco
· Alcoholic beverages
· Fireworks
· Unconstitutional literature
· Narcotics
· Pornography
· Plants
· Products made from animals
· Over-the-counter medications, diet pills, supplements, vitamins and herbal remedies for people and animals
The use of an APO address to operate a home business is also prohibited.
German ministerial officials, European theater leadership and postal officials applied this new level of enforcement, which ensures the safety of consumers and the environment.
