10/3/2012 - SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- According to Spangdahlem instruction, vehicles must be equipped with winter or all-weather tires Nov. 15 - March 1.
It is also German law to have these types of tires on vehicles when driving on icy roads, regardless of the time of year.
Winter tires are typically marked with an "M+S", "M/S" or a snowflake symbol directly on sidewall of the tire. Studded tires are not allowed in Germany.
Winter in Germany brings not only snow and sleet, but fog and icy roads. Preparing vehicles to drive through adverse weather on the narrow and winding roads affects every driver's safety.
People should also check the condition of their tires for flat spots, cracks in the sidewall and bulges or knots. Bulges and knots are a sign of slipped belts, and the tire needs to be replaced. It is also important to check both sides of the tire and the entire contact patch.
The tread depth of the traction surface of tires needs to be at least 1/16 of an inch or 1.6 millimeters. Drivers should buy new tires if the tread depth is close to 1/16 of an inch before the winter driving season.
Drivers should also check the tire pressure of each tire. The recommended pressure for stock tires are typically found in the owner's manual.
Once tires are checked, drivers should also inspect the rest of their vehicle to include checking front, rear and flashing hazard lights all are operational, and wiper blades are in good condition and not ripped or dry-rotted. Windshield wiper should be changed to a fluid that is specifically made for winter conditions, as these types of fluids are designed to resist freezing. Finally, with the use of road salts, car's paint and body can be protected from rust by washing cars and finishing with a coat of high-quality wax.
With these simple "do-it-yourself" measures, people can be ready for the snow and ice season keeping everyone on the roads safe. |
