The 702 MUNSS is a Geographically Separated Unit responsible for receipt, storage, maintenance and control of US war reserve munitions in support of the German Air Force Jagdbomber-Geschwader 33 (33rd Fighter-Bomber (PA-200) Wing. The squadron directly supports North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) contingency and wartime operations and its strike mission.

The 702 MUNSS is a tenant unit on Flugplatz B├╝chel, a German Air Base, located 8 miles northwest of Cochem, Germany, a city along the Mosel River and 41 miles northeast of Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany.

Personnel and Resources
The 702 MUNSS has approximately 139 active duty military, 6 non-appropriated funds civilian, and two local national employees. The military members are composed of 20 separate Air Force Specialty Codes. The unit supports over 360 family members and a few retirees in the local area. The unit is responsible for ownership, custody, maintenance, and release of a protection level 1 stockpile with an annual budget of $200K. The German Air Force through a bi-lateral agreement between the US and German Governments maintains the property occupied by USAF personnel.

The 702nd is divided into 5 flights consisting of the maintenance, operations, communications, custody and force support. The US squadron area consists of a mission support area, community support center (includes, consolidated club, shoppette, and library), unit activity center (includes learning resource center and chapel), dining facility, and fitness center. The squadron is capable of providing a number of services like a main operating base on a smaller scale.

Schools and Housing
The 702 MUNSS is considered a part of the DoDDS Kaiserslautern School District. K-12 students attend the DoDDS schools on the former Bitburg AB. Since there are no government-provided quarters, a dedicated housing office helps members find a place to live in the surrounding communities. For services and support beyond capability of the unit, the squadron relies on the 52 FW at Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany as the support MOB.
