The job market is limited, with very few professional or technical positions. Employment is generally limited to on-base. Limited part-time opportunities do exist off-base and knowledge of the German language is helpful. The major employers on base are the Civilian Personnel office, Non-Appropriated Funds (NAF), Defense Commissary Agency (DECA), and the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES).
Family members are encouraged to use the Family Support Center's Employment Assistance Programs to create or update an existing resume or Federal Job Application prior to arriving at Spangdahlem. Spouses seeking employment should hand carry important documents such as their last SF 50 (if Federal Civil Service), LWOP statement, DD Form 214, High School/College Transcripts, resume, etc.
Since conventional employment opportunities may be limited, you may want to consider operating your own business. Currently we have people providing catering, seamstress, cake decorating, tax preparation, and writing services to name just a few. Please check with the Family Support Center about guidelines and restrictions.
