SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany --

The Spangdahlem Multicultural Awareness Council is scheduled to host Multicultural Awareness Day, a free event for Sabers and their families, Aug. 18, 2016, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on base.

The day will kick off at 7 a.m. with a 5K fun run outside the Skelton Memorial Fitness Center, which will be followed by various, culturally themed events from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Club Eifel here.

The annual event, formerly called Diversity Day, will feature Sabers from various countries and backgrounds who will showcase their diverse cultures through displays, performances, food and fashion.

“No matter what the name of the day is called, we are focusing on the positive attributes our different cultures bring to the fight,” said Tech. Sgt. Matthew Fultz, vice president of the SMAC.  “We can’t accomplish our completely diverse missions without a completely diverse force.”

This year’s event will offer attendees several opportunities to experience that diverse force first-hand. Multicultural Day guests will be able to sample foods from around the world, visit informational booths providing history about multiple cultures and watch a variety of performances to include singing, dancing and a cultural fashion show.

In addition to highlighting diversity at Spangdahlem, the event provides Sabers and their families an opportunity to simultaneously observe several federally-mandated observances such as African American History Month, Women’s History Month, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and many more.

“We intentionally scheduled this event prior to the start of school, so families could attend,” said Master Sgt. Kyle Warnock, president of SMAC.

Planned Multicultural Day events that families can enjoy include:

  • 7 a.m. – 5K fun run starting at the Skelton Memorial Fitness Center.

  • 9 a.m. – Opening ceremony

  • 10 a.m. – Kindergarten dance performance

  • 10:30 a.m. – Acapella performance, karaoke and a multicultural fashion show.

  • 11:30 a.m. – Cultural dance performances.

  • Noon – Brass band performance.

  • 1 p.m. Signing and guitar performance.
