Spangdahlem Airmen will conduct awareness activities in support of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month throughout June.

June has been proclaimed LGBT Pride Month by U.S. President Barack Obama, who called upon all people to eliminate prejudice everywhere it exists and celebrate the diversity of the American people.

"Since our founding, America has advanced on an unending path toward becoming a more perfect Union," said Barack Obama, president of the United States, in a May 31, 2016, proclamation. "This journey, led by forward-thinking individuals who have set their sights on reaching for a brighter tomorrow, has never been easy or smooth. The fight for dignity and equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people is reflected in the tireless dedication of advocates and allies who strive to forge a more inclusive society. They have spurred sweeping progress by changing hearts and minds and by demanding equal treatment -- under our laws, from our courts, and in our politics.  This month, we recognize all they have done to bring us to this point, and we recommit to bending the arc of our Nation toward justice."

Ash Carter, U.S. secretary of defense, echoed the president's remarks in a June 7, 2016, proclamation from his office.

"This month is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month, an occasion that brings the LGBT community together with their family, friends, and allies to take pride in themselves and their many achievements," Carter said. "Throughout our history, brave LGBT soldiers, sailors, airmen, Coast Guardsmen, and Marines have served and fought for our nation.  Their readiness and willingness to serve has made our military stronger and our nation safer.  We continue to take great pride in all that these men and women contribute to the Department and our mission.  Their hard work, courage, and sacrifices make them respected members of our diverse DoD family."
