The 52nd Medical Operations Squadron Family Advocacy office is spreading the word about Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and they need the communities artistic abilities to make it successful.

Family Advocacy is holding the 2013 Clothesline Project from Oct. 21-25 in front of the base post office.

The Clothesline Project is a visual representation to bring awareness about domestic violence, said Brittny Gainey, 52nd MDOS Family Advocacy intervention specialist.

The painted T-shirts featuring statements and descriptions about domestic violence to make people aware of the matter and what they can do about it, will be hung on a clothesline.

"Victims of domestic violence have a voice but sometimes they may be scared to use it," Gainey said. "Doing something like this allows them to speak out about what has happened to them in a different way or for other people to be the voice for them."

According to the Department of Justice, domestic violence not only affects those who are abused but also has a substantial effect on family members, friends, co-workers, other witnesses and the community at-large.

The message behind the project is that while domestic violence may happen, it is never acceptable, Gainey said.

The community is invited to paint the T-shirts at the Family Advocacy Clinic Oct. 18 from 4:00-5:30 p.m.
