The tax center opened to serve Airmen Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. at Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany. The tax center offers a free service to assist individuals with basic federal and state income tax returns.

Tax returns will be prepared by Internal Revenue Service-certified volunteers at the center until Friday, June 15. Clients will be served by appointment only, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Being stationed overseas members are allowed an automatic two-month extension to file a return and pay any amount due without requesting an extension. In order to use this extension, the member must attach a statement to their return explaining what qualified them for the extension. Military orders count as proof of serving overseas.

The tax center is located on Arnold Blvd., Building 125, on the first floor.

Eligible clients include military members E-1 through E-9 and O-4 and below and their dependents only.

“This is such a great resource for the Airmen on base to use,” said Airman 1st Class Whitney Avey, 52nd Fighter Wing command post emergency action controller.

The tax center may not be able to assist individuals who have extensive investments, more than one rental property or other complex tax issues.

“It’s really awesome that we can provide this quick and painless tax service to Airmen,” said Staff Sgt. Madeline Ericson, 52nd FW Staff Judge Advocate NCO in-charge of civil law. “I'm glad our office and fantastic team of volunteers can make a positive difference and I hope we can continue this program for years to come!
